Beating the January Blues

There’s something about the month of January that makes it extra difficult to get through.  Maybe it’s because we’re coming off the high of the holidays.  Maybe it’s because we know that winter has just begun, and we have three dark, cold months to come.

If you’re worried about making it through the month, read on for some advice.

  1. Take Your Meds

If you regularly take medication and find that it helps you live your life, please take your meds.  You’ll be glad you did.

  2. Rest

You need sleep whether you like it or not.  Get the amount of sleep you need, and you will wake up feeling like you’ve got a better handle on your day.  You also need to rest outside of sleeping.  Pay attention to how you’re feeling throughout the week.  If you start to feel burnt out or overwhelmed, take a break away from your daily tasks.  Do something that feels good.

  3. Socialize

I know this is a tough one when you’re low on energy and not in a positive mood, but many people don’t realize they’re lonely until loneliness overwhelms them.  You don’t have to do a lot, just make time to see your besties in the least taxing ways possible, even if you just hang out at your house together.

  4. Indulge

Let yourself have the little things that bring you joy.  Get that coffee.  See the movie you’ve been looking forward to.  Take yourself out to dinner.  Even if you can only afford to treat yourself twice a month, make it intentional, and make it happen.

  5. Etc.

Do whatever you need to do to make it through this month.  If it’s scrolling on your phone more than you’d like to, do it.  If it’s sleeping a whole day, do it.  And don’t feel bad about it.  You’re doing the best you can.

Also, remember that having a bad day doesn't mean it has to be a bad month, but

You must survive before you can thrive
